I chose the skeleton of Pharlap the famous racehorse as my chosen exhibition from Te Papa. I think the way in which this exhibit is displayed and the space around it is important. The 1:1 scale of the racehorse allows us as viewers to get a sense of what it was like to be standing next to him, we are able to get a sense of the power and strength of Phar Lap. Phar Lap lead a successful career until he fell ill and died. Phar lap had been a symbol of hope during the depression in the 1930’s, therefore he was/is important to many people. I believe the idea of this exhibition standing alone, around no other work is so he captures peoples attention, people really notice him and give him the recognition he deserves. I think the way the exhibition is displayed with his skeleton in a glass box and a picture of him directly behind also adds to the meaning and importance of this display, we are able to see real parts of Phar Lap but are also able to make connections with what he looked like on the outside through the photograph behind, it contextualises the skeleton well.
