Rebekah: WEEK 2: Te Papa exhibition - chosen object

Safety razor of Sergeant George Thomson, possibly gifted by his girlfriend. About 1914.
Maker Unknown, England.
Steel, brass.
On loan from Tamaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum.

‘Small Pleasures’
“We were supposed to shave everyday, but water was scarce. One trick was to use tea dregs, which stained our faces a dirty yellow”.
This object is from the ‘Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War’ exhibition at Te Papa. As a part of a group of items exhibited under the name 'Small Pleasures'. I chose this object in particular, because at first glance I had no idea what it was or what it could be. Only after reading the small blurb of information about this object, that I was then able to recognise that it was in fact a shaver. That was the part that interested me. I like when I have to read the pieces of writing or information next to display items, to either find out more about the display or in this case what the object being displayed actually is. This is what engages me further with exhibitions and allows me to interact with them.
