Honor: WEEK 2 Te Papa exhibition piece

Te Papa exhibition piece

After the visit to Te Papa with my original group I chose my object to be the ship area associated with 19th century crossing section of the museum. My predominant object I chose was the wooden swinging doors and the opening on the roof. Chosen because of the light aspects created through the cubed grid projected on to the roof. I also liked the interactive aspect to the display of opening the wooden swing doors to see what is behind. There was the food eaten onboard the ships, a medicine chest and some entertainment such as backgammon and cards behind the doors.
The agendas and motivations of this piece is to emphasise what was taken onboard the ships when the 19th century crossing took place. The conventions, nature and content of this work were rather simplistic, real life or imitation piece of the medications, games and food taken on board the ship behind the swing doors that would have consisted on the ships. I would say this is a very narrative based exhibition as stories would have to be told for younger generations to understand what has occurred during this time period and what happened on the crossing. It is very factual but ultimately narrative based. Within the spatial context the work is set out to look as realistic as possible even down to the lighting used to create the shadows from the slots in the doors or the overhead hole to look through. The materials used were all made of wood which replicates the materials used on the ships. As far as technology goes there is minimalistic new technology, lighting and back lighting behind the doors. This piece is about interaction and encourages the viewer to look behind the doors to find out what was taken on board the ships. The target market can be considered very broadly, obviously only for those who visit Te Papa but within that range it can be anyone, young or old that shows an interest in the 19th century crossing and how that occurred.
