Rebekah: WEEK 8: Researching digital technology in shipping containers

Shared Studios

"Shared_Studios is a multidisciplinary art, design and technology collective building an Internet you can walk through. With patented innovations in hardware, software, and design, Shared_Studios designs and installs interconnected environments around the world, including Shared_Portals, Shared_Playgrounds and Shared_Stages. Shared_Studios is creating a Shared_World, where we all talk, work, collaborate, debate, and play across all forms of distance as if sharing the same space."

Portal Container

The Outdoor Portal Container, is used for outdoor installations by Shared Studios. These outdoor portals can contain up to 8 people at one time. The purpose of the portals, is to fabricate the sense and feeling of occupying the same space as another person. That is in the same outdoor portal else where in the world. The climate in the portal containers is controlled by an HVAC system, capable of heating and cooling in severe weather conditions. The outdoor portals are delivered by a rollback truck. More complex and placements in difficult locations may require a crane or forklift.

An idea of what the projections in the portals look like:

Electricity: "The Portal requires access to two standard 120V power outlets. The AMP draw is 17A and the Portal has its own circuit breakers".
Internet: "The Portal requires a hardwire Ethernet connection of 15 mbps up and 15mbps down with a ping under 15ms. We can make do with less bandwidth and a wifi or even cellular connection if necessary, but this may degrade quality and reliability".

I found this research very relevant to what our group is trying to achieve in our exhibition. In terms of the shipping container space/size/restraints, the need for electricity and projecting (live) video into the space itself.
